The long version

The Forerunner 970 is the new top of Garmin's dedicated running line, and it spends its upgrades on the display and the sensor stack rather than reinventing the watch. The 1.4" AMOLED panel sits under sapphire crystal instead of Gorilla Glass and runs substantially brighter than the 965 it replaces, which matters more than it sounds on a bright trail at midday. The optical sensor moves to Elevate Gen 5, adding a medically-certified ECG for AFib detection and continuous skin temperature alongside the existing HRV status, Training Readiness and Training Load Ratio. GNSS gets Garmin's new SatIQ system, which automatically switches between GPS-only, all-satellite and full multi-band positioning depending on signal conditions, trading a little battery for accuracy only where the terrain actually needs it. New hardware extras include a two-colour LED flashlight in the case edge and a speaker and microphone for phone calls and voice-to-text from the wrist. Offline TopoActive maps and 32 GB of storage for downloaded music round it out, and none of it needs a paid Garmin Connect subscription to work.
